Why our numbers line up
Race websites and GPS watches rarely agree on how much a course climbs, and neither can be compared from one race to the next. So we rebuild every profile from the course line and one terrain model, smooth it over the same window, and show the source and the uncertainty beside each result. When you sort the list, every row means the same thing.
Questions
How the numbers are made.
Where do the elevation numbers come from?
From the course line, with every height taken from one terrain model per country: national lidar for some, a national or European model for the rest. Watch recordings help check a route, but a number never comes from one.
Why does your gain differ from the organiser’s?
Because almost every organiser measures a different way, and hardly any of them say how. Where they publish a figure we show it beside ours, along with the model, the sampling interval and the smoothing window, so you can see where the gap comes from.
What is terrain-adjusted time?
What a course costs you against a flat 42.195 km, worked out from the energy cost of running each gradient instead of from the total climb. A course can climb a lot and still be quick if it gives the height back.
Can I download the data?
Every written-up course has its line as a GPX: our resampled geometry, with heights from the terrain model in place of the GPS noise a watch file carries. If a course line can't be redistributed, there's no download.
Which course is next?
28 courses are measured and 26 are written up. The rest follow in the order their data is ready, and every page shows the date it was last checked.
